Ligue 1 wrap: Lille show title credentials

Reigning champions Lille made a statement to the rest of Ligue 1 with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Lyon on Sunday, as PSG also won.

Rudi Garcia s side made a slow start to their title defence this season, but have now recorded three victories in succession after dispatching their latest opponents at the Stade Lille-Metropole.

Lyon, seven-time champions between 2001 and 2008, had led in the match, through Jimmy Briand s 21st-minute strike.

Set-up by Yoann Gourcuff, Briand cut in from the wing and sent a low strike under the legs of Lille goalkeeper Mickael Landreau.

Senegal striker Moussa Sow levelled in first-half stoppage time for Lille, seizing on a loose ball inside the area and netting with an inventive back-heel shot.

Marko Basa made it 2-1 just past the hour mark, heading home Dimitri Payet s delivery.

And substitute Joe Cole, on-loan from English Premier League side Liverpool, completed the scoring in the 83rd minute.

The England international exchanged passes with Sow, before producing a tap-in finish from close range.

Lille s victory lifts them up to third, three points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who won 2-0 at home to Dijon.

A goal in each half from Brazilian forward Nene secured victory for the home side at the Parc des Princes.

Reaping the benefit of their hefty spending in the transfer market, PSG have now won five Ligue 1 matches in succession, and eight of their last nine in the league.

In the other match on Sunday, a Julien Feret goal in the 73rd minute at the Stade Abbe-Deschamps helped Rennes record a 1-0 win away to Auxerre.

Frederic Antonetti s side are up to fourth, one point behind Lille, while Auxerre are 11th.
