Gerrard challenges Rangers after achieving first Celtic Park double for 23 years

Steven Gerrard challenged his Rangers players to follow up their success against Celtic with a meaningful title challenge after winning a second straight Old Firm derby.

Rangers triumphed 2-0 on Saturday thanks to an unlikely double from centre-back Connor Goldson, who scored in each half as a depleted Celtic failed to register a single shot on target.

Having also won the last meeting in December, Gerrard has become the first Rangers manager to win back-to-back away league games over Celtic since March 1997.

As his team bid to prevent their rivals from winning a 10th straight Scottish Premiership, he urged his players to build on their victory.

Asked if the 23-year first proves the gap has closed between the two teams, Gerrard told Sky Sports: The play…

De Gea: Man Utd are not good enough

David de Gea issued a damning assessment of Manchester United s quality and acknowledged it will be very difficult for them to finish in the top four.

United succumbed to a surprise 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, with Anthony Gordon s deflected strike proving to be the difference.

Ralf Rangnick has now triumphed in just eight of his first 17 Premier League games as the Red Devils boss, giving him a win percentage of 47% – the worst of any manager the club has had in the competition.

It was United s eighth defeat of the season – only the eighth time they have lost that many games in a single campaign but the sixth since 2012-13.

They could find themselves six points adrift of the top four by the end of…

Jurgen Klopp s Liverpool did their talking on the pitch as the reigning Premier League champions snatched a late 2-1 win over erstwhile leaders Tottenham.

West Ham and Crystal Palace also finished all square, as did Fulham against Brighton and Hove Albion, while Leeds United and Everton both picked up victories over Newcastle United and Leicester City respectively.

Here is the pick of the Opta f…

Mourinho has made Tottenham Premier League title contenders – Robinson

Jose Mourinho has turned Tottenham into genuine Premier League title contenders, according to former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Mourinho s men host bitter rivals Arsenal on Sunday and sit top of the table heading into the weekend, making them clear favourites to cement their bragging rights.

It was widely regarded as a controversial move when Spurs swapped Mauricio Pochettino for Mourinho in November 2019, but the Portuguese has proven his worth.

With 19 victories from 36 top-flight games, he has a win percentage of 52.8, with Tottenham s lofty position a vast improvement on the 14th spot they occupied when he took charge.

And former England international Robinson, who played for Spurs between 2004 and 2008, paid credit to chairman Dani…

Silva has been on the books of Benfica since 2016 and has come through the club’s youth system to establish himself in the first team. The young centre-back has made 29 starts and on…

Simeone confirms Suarez will play against Valencia

Diego Simeone has confirmed that Luis Suarez will play for Atletico Madrid against Valencia on Saturday, despite a lack of form and apparent recent falling out between the pair.

The Uruguay international is Los Rojiblancos top scorer in all competitions this season with nine goals, but has only found the net once in his last 11 club matches.

Suarez made his frustration known when he was substituted during last month s 2-1 defeat at Sevilla, appearing to direct expletives towards his manager.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a Premier League reunion with former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, but Simeone insisted at a news conference ahead of the weekend s clash at the Wanda Metropolitan…

No point thinking about what might´ve been – Pioli as Milan miss chance to secure top-four finish

Milan head coach Stefano Pioli urged his players not to think about what could have been had they beaten Cagliari, with Serie A s top-four race going down to the last day.

Pioli s Milan would have sealed Champions League qualification with a victory at San Siro on Sunday, but were held to a goalless draw, failing to beat Cagliari for the first time in a home league match since October 1999.

It was also Milan s first 0-0 draw in Serie A in 56 games, since January 2020, while it marked the first time the Rossoneri have failed to score against Cagliari at San Siro in the top flight in just under 24 years.

Without the injured Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Milan managed just two of their 21 attempts on target, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma – making potentially his last…

The 21-year-old has also impressed for England after making her debut against Austria last September, and with 11 caps and one goal for the Lionesses under her belt, James is now preparing for her first major tournament as a senior international as part of the squad for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that gets under way in just under…
