New York Liberty guard Shoni Schimmel announced her plan to sit out the 2017 WNBA season via team press release on Saturday. The hiatus comes after a down year on the court for Schimmel, a two-time All-Star who will be sitting out what would have been her fourth season in the league. Schimmel did not report to training camp late last month, with New York coach Bill Laimbeer telling ESPN on April 28 that Schimmel “decided to take some time off.” Laimbeer did not specify why, telling the reporter to “call and ask her. I’m not going to speak for her. She’s on the roster, she’s under contract. It’s her choice.” According to a her statement, Schimmel will return to the Liberty for the 2018 season. “I’m very grateful to the New York Liberty for allowing me to take this …
This is it. This is the showdown we've waited an entire year for (OK, more like five months). In one corner, we have Shamus Beaglehole: English footballer, #3 seed of the Sithole Regional, vanquisher of Curvaceous Bass and Dr. Loki Skylizard, and bearer of a last name that sounds like an old man's curmudgeonly insult. Make sure to say his name out loud, and preferably in as stereotypical a British accent as you can muster, before deciding on his fate. In the other corner is Chillie Poon, a former Hong Kong beauty-pageant contestant. The Chrotchtangle Regional's #10 seed is the champion of the sophomoric lobby and one of the simplest punchlines in the bracket. We've made it pretty clear how we feel about Chillie, but on the eve of her title assault, I will pose just…
The New York Mets are not the worst team in baseball. They are not even the most ineptly run franchise in their own division. Yet, their 2009 campaign may have forever redefined the concept of losing. Nothing has gone right for the poor Metropolitans in this calendar year. From the ownership down to the bat boys, the entire organization has been beset by financial issues, management missteps, injuries, errors, poor timing, and just plain bad luck. Every week seemed to bring a new crisis or terrible disaster and through it all, they constantly found inventive and entertaining ways to squander victory. And there's still a month left! Join us now on a journey through the outer borough's season of hell, as we look back on the losingest bunch of losers who ever lost a baseball game…
When Brendan Shanahan was a kid, his favorite player turned down his autograph request. When Brendan Shanahan made the NHL, he beat the hell out of said player at the puck drop. Do not mess with Brendan Shanahan. [ Newark Star-Ledger] …
data-mm-id=”_606yidj0f”>There is a certain segment of sports fans, usually younger and Extremely Online, who won't even hear of the suggestion that sometimes it's better to hustle than accumulate style points near home plate after a well-struck ball. Even when the difference between admiring a home run that actually gets over the fence and admiring a ball that remains in play is pointed out. But if ever there was a time to point to an example of the potential folly of the practice, it's now. George Springer, who is cementing himself as one of the best postseason players of all-time, drove a ball to deep right-center in the eighth inning of a 5-3 game last night. He obviously thought he'd gotten all of it and the scoreboard was about to be leveled up at 5-5.Houston i…

I do, and that’s how I feel deep down as I stand here.””He said he needed to discuss things with his family after the season and make sure they were on board with his decision to keep playing. data-mm-id=”_dtndv00yc”>You're not going to believe it, but Michael Jordan has been telling some conflicting tales in regards to the Dream Team's roster construction over the past 28 years. It has been long believed that Jordan pulled strings to keep Isiah Thomas off the team due to the duo's deep mutual disdain. It was also believed that Sports Illustrated's Jack McCallum had audio to prove it. McCallum confirmed he was in possession of such a clip during a recent podcast with The Ringer's Bryan Curtis. And yet, when ESPN's The Last Dance approached the topic, Jordan and everyone else involved — including Rod Thorn, chairman of the selection committee for that year's Olympics — was quick to deny any such thing happened. Yet, lo and behold, that sim…

data-mm-id=”_12zhz3y3v”>Cam Newton's decision to sign with the Evil Empire in the Northeast means the New England Patriots are once again a force to be reckoned with. Not that anyone was underestimating them before, but going from Jarrett Stidham to Newton as starting quarterback tends to increase a team's competitive prospects rather significantly. Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe have been discussing the development over the last two days. On Monday, Bayless said Newton's presence means the Patriots' ceiling now resides at 9-7, rather than the 4-12 prediction he made before. On Tuesday, Bayless admitted he got a little excited (an extremely rare admission) and proclaimed it would be a minor miracle if the former MVP got New England to nine wins. "It will be a …
