It’s always darkest before dawn, and the Washington Commanders’ 4-13 (6-10-1 ATS) finish to 2023 was pretty damn dark.
Year 2 under new ownership sees cracks of sunlight on the horizon with a three-point restoration for 2024; new GM, new coaches, and new quarterback.
Head coach Dan Quinn injects Washington’s defense with a strong dose of chaos after making Dallas one of the most disruptive defenses in the league. On the other side of the ball, Kliff Kingsbury is tasked with molding another top QB prospect in Jayden Daniels, utilizing the Heisman winner’s dual-threat skill set in his up-tempo attack.
Not all the pieces are in place and this team is very much a work in progress. That’s why we find the Commanders getting point…

Because the Bay Area sports teams haven’t endured enough injuries this year, add Klay Thompson to the mix. The three-time NBA Champion suffered a season-ending Achilles tear on Wednesday in a workout with other league players, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported. What an awful blow to Thompson and the Golden State Warriors alike. Thompson, who is a five-time NBA All-Star and part of one of the most prolific backcourts in NBA history, missed all of last season with a torn ACL that he sustained in Game 6 of the 2018 NBA Finals. After rehabbing for an entire season, the now 30-year-old is faced with yet another year of recovery — this time to his opposite leg. The Warriors will be applying for the Disabled Player Exception worth $9.3 million to attempt to add a player to compensate…
Coventry are mourning the death at 82 of George Curtis, one of the men who helped to mastermind their 1987 FA Cup triumph.
Nicknamed “Iron Man” in his playing days, Curtis made 543 appearances for Coventry as a central defender between 1956 and 1969, captaining the club as they climbed from Division Three South to the old First Division. He then joined forces with the chief coach John Sillett to guide the club to a 3-2 victory against Tottenham at Wembley.

BOLD TRAFFORD?
The 1995-96 season was a significant moment for football in Manchester. United won the Double as their hapless neighbours, City, were relegated in fittingly farcical circumstances. Off the field (or adjacent to it, at least), United were gold-plating their dominance with the completion of a new North Stand that made Old Trafford the biggest club stadium in England. And in what must have felt like a footnote at the time, Manchester was awarded the 2002 Commonwealth Games, with a bid based around a new, purpose-built stadium on a brownfield site. Fast-forward three decades, and the Etihad is now home to English football’s dominant force, an all-conquering team who play in sky blue. It’s been a journey tha…
It’s like the holy grail of professional sports contracts. The elusive no-trade clause. This stipulation is preserved for a select few, but they almost seem pointless in the NBA. Last week Bradley Beal waived the no-trade clause in his deal with the Washington Wizards to clear a path to Phoenix. He could’ve orchestrated this without such a clause in his contract. We see so many NBA stars force their way to any team they want, even without this stipulation in their contracts. It makes you wonder why it still exists. NBA governors (owners) agreeing to keep this clause around is more of a mystery. With the increasing power of players over the past couple of decades, with, or without the no-trade clause, you’ve got to wonder if we’ve seen the last in Beal’s current deal. Is Wemb…
So remember, the Sklar Brothers-Bill Simmons feud? Simmons apparently has disliked the "Cheap Seats" hosts' comedy sensibilities for years, and, probably because it's not exactly ESPN's most popular program, Simmons has been allowed to openly mock it in his columns. The Sklar brothers have always seemed bewildered by Simmons' vitriol, though, considering their show appears to be in its last days on ESPN Classic, it's hard to consider them the ultimate victors. (Though they were on "Law & Order," which is a definite point in their favor.) Anyway, apparently in this week's "Cheap Seats" — we didn't watch it, naturally — the Sklar brothers slipped in a dig at Simmons, posting his picture and alerting other ESPN empl…
